2011 Idaho High School Championship Report

Here is the report from the May 1 Idaho High School Championship at C.J. Strike Reservoir.

REEL Kids Casting Event Idaho Sportsman Show

On March 3rd through March 6th, 2011, The Idaho Bass Federation had our annual opportunity to touch the lives of many young people by participating in The Idaho Sportsman Show with REEL Kids events.

In 2010 over the 4 day period 312 youth ages 7 to 15 visited the booth at the Idaho Sportsman Show along with an uncounted number of youth that are yet to reach the age of 7. Each of these young people were taken into one of two lanes set up with a bulls eye target and marked off at distances of 10, 20 and 30 feet. From 10 feet the youth was instructed in flipping a lure to the target. Once they had mastered that step they were moved to the 20 foot mark where they learned to pitch to the target. At 30 feet they learned to cast to the target. As you can imagine many of the lures went over the curtains and out of the lanes landing on spectators and one poor vendor trying to demonstrate ATV’s.

The host for Thursday nights event was Idaho Bassmasters, while Friday evening was hosted by Snake River Bassmasters. On Saturday two sessions were hosted by members of Idaho Bass Anglers while general membership conducted the event on Saturday evening. Sunday’s sessions were the responsibility of The Idaho Bass Federation State Team. Thousands of parents and other spectators were witness to these events and we had the opportunity to spend valuable time with residents of Idaho and Oregon who were curious about our organization. This gave us a valuable opportunity to spend time with them and talk of our passion for bass fishing. We hope to have touched each of the youth that visited us over that long weekend and anticipate their desire to become involved in outdoor pursuits.

2011 Idaho Junior Youth Championship Report

Well, the 2011 State Junior Championship is now in the books. Four anglers and their parents met on a chilly, breezy evening on May 21 at Sugarloaf campground on Cascade Lake. The competitors reviewed the rules, and were given some instruction on how to file a protest in a fishing tournament. We then had the boater draw and sent the two boaters away to decide on a fishing plan for tournament day, and to learn something about their co-angler that most people wouldn't know. This brought the boys together as an ice breaker activity and the results were quite funny!! After some food, donated by Smoky Davis of Boise, we held a short campfire and called it a day.

Sunday morning brought overcast skies but very calm waters. Thanks to our boat captains Tony Shuyler and Ernie Davis, the boys safely got to their spots all day, and returned to the dock for a 3:30 weigh-in. As the dust settled, two winners emerged and began their preparations for a trip to Hot Springs Arkansas in August.

I would like to thank all the parents of the competitors, as well as the boat captains and all our great sponsors for making this tournament a success.

Catch a Special Thrill Event

Each August, anglers from The Idaho Bass Federation participate in the local "Catch A Special Thrill" Program at Black Canyon Reservoir. In the C.A.S.T. program, local anglers take handicapped and terminally ill kids from the Mountain States Tumor Institute out for a morning of fishing. After the fishing, everyone participates in a barbeque and an awards presentation for the kids that caught fish and the anglers that helped them.
The South Idaho C.A.S.T. Event is scheduled for August 20, 2011 at Black Canyon Reservoir. Come and help out a kid!

Scales of Justice

The Idaho Bass Federation annually participates another unique youth event; the Scale of Justice kids tournament. It is held in September on C.J. Strike Reservoir. A group of Idaho bass anglers get together with the Ada County Court System and Judge John Vehlow to take some kids involved with the court system out for a day of fishing. After fishing for a few hours everyone goes to an awards ceremony and has a great picnic lunch.
The Scale of Justice tournament for 2011 is scheduled for September 17, 2011 on C.J. Strike Reservoir. Make plans to sign up to help out a kid in 2011!
